Melissa Grey & David Morneau, Robert Kirkbride – ‘Always Becoming’

/

Crafted to play on an endless loop, Always Becoming is a thoroughly hypnotic success of an EP — presenting an instrumental guitar-based sound with ample texture and atmosphere. A collaborative endeavor, the release features Robert Kirkbride alongside the duo of Melissa Grey & David Morneau.

Opener “Being” consumes with its trickling acoustical backing amidst a crystal-clear leading guitar twang, playing like a clear break within rain. A thumping percussive element emerges in the final minute, as spacey keys glide alongside the guitar work for an intriguing finale.

“Ever” also dazzles with its interplaying acoustical underlying and sporadic guitar twangs, though casting an eerier tone. Occasional percussion resembles a cricket chirping, furthering the very natural-feeling sensation of the track with an electro-acoustic resonance.

The concluding “Becoming” plays like a natural progression from “Ever,” embracing that track’s mysterious vibe with a similarly graceful guitar-laden correspondence. The layers of guitars combine throughout these tracks with inventive percussive components for a compellingly atmospheric pull, evident throughout and enticing loop-friendly replays.

“Being” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of April 2023’ Spotify playlist.
