Dublin-based collective INGOODFRM cast a murky, jangly spell with their debut single “nosedive,” whose understated vocal presence and textural guitar-led dynamics make for a dreamy, shoegaze-inspired success. Per the band, the track “encourages listeners to confront moments of personal turmoil and embrace the process of growth and self-awareness.”

Comprising graduates of architecture and design schools, the project is reputed for their live performances, bringing a sort of visual artistry alongside their quality, atmospheric songwriting. Led by Seán Brunswick — who writes, records, and produces the band’s music — INGOODFRM makes a strong impression with “nosedive.”

Serving as “ode to resilience and growth in the face of personal struggles,” “nosedive” excels with a variety of affecting guitar tones — from the opening warm gauzy layers to the expressive twangy expanse past the one-minute turn. The mellow vocals add seamlessly, allowing the steady percussive pit-patter and glowing guitars to assume prominence. “nosedive” is a dreamy standout from these Dublin-based risers.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of May 2023’ Spotify playlist.
