Artela – “Seven”

London-based artist Artela debuts with a stylish electronic pop success in new single “Seven.” The opening lyrics — “I can see everything,” — resonate amidst a diverse electronic soundscape, from starry-eyed synth lushness to rhythmically intense propulsions. The latter’s energy is particularly evident upon the “I can see you,” turn.

The initially minimalist electronic pulses develop seamlessly into the bass-heavy thickness thereafter, aptly emphasizing the dynamic tones to follow. The intense percussive fury around 01:40 produces a spine-chilling effect, in particular, with these hot-and-cold sensation. The higher-pitched, robotic vocal feeling during the “see you,” refrain is also hauntingly effective. Presenting a balance of hypnotically lush and rhythmically infectious, “Seven” is a stirring debut from Artela.

Artela elaborates further on the track:

“It’s a slow-slow-paced electronica track with lyrics that share the paranoia of always feeling watched, whether by the government, my friends or society in general. The song explores the pressure put on women to conform, and my experience as someone who could not and would not fit in.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of May 2023’ Spotify playlist.
