jrdfllrmn – ‘albatross’

/

The debut album from Ohio-based artist jrdfllrmn, albatross is a gorgeous, dreamy production with explorations into shoegaze, pop, and rock. The project of Jared Fullerman excels with a hooky, atmospheric glow throughout — balancing more subdued, contemplative soundscapes with moments of intensely textural effervescence.

“familiar face” struts a vibrant immediacy, growing a post-punk bass punch into bright synth swells and general bounciness. A mid-point synth dazzling conjures a melodic spell. The track is exemplary of the album’s knack for eclectic tonal soundscapes, weaving cohesively from debonair understatements into hooky imprints.

Jangly guitars and hazy synths concoct a dream-pop allure on “hermit,” another success. “the messenger” also stands out with its balmy, lounge-set piano tones and caressing vocals. albatross is full of highlights in songwriting and atmosphere, elevating consistently with a melodic dream-pop savvy.

“hermit” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2023’ Spotify playlist.

“familiar face” is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Dream Pop.
