Liars Teeth – ‘Sungrazer’ EP

/

London-based band Liars Teeth deliver a consuming blend of post-punk and alt-rock on their feverish new EP, Sungrazer. They describe the release as “written as a fable for the Digital age,” while shining “a light on the isolation of constant connectivity and the challenge of finding direction in the noise.”

We were already treated to the riveting rock sound of the opening “Oblivion” last month, and the other three tracks on the EP succeed with an equally striking composure. The subsequent “Modern Romance” grips from the get-go with murky guitar twangs, exuding a ferocious post-punk tint in the underlying rhythms. Moody vocals and a bass-fronted buzzing lead the compelling verses. A chilling, ardent uptick takes hold as the second minute approaches. Blistering guitars, across multiple layers, cap off this passionate rock success.

The EP’s title track also stirs in its tonal dynamics, from rousing guitars to bass-y contemplations. “Are you losing your grip?” the opening vocals ask amidst the latter setting. The resonating “feel the warmth in your blood,” vocal sequence concocts a haunting appeal, in particular, as the vocals ask “can you find a way out?” amidst the moody post-punk guitar hints and bass-y propulsions. The concluding “Void” resembles Interpol in its crawling guitar tones, easing into thicker guitar pushes throughout much of the duration, specifically during the raucously invigorating conclusion. Liars Teeth live up to the ample promise shown on “Oblivion” with the riveting Sungrazer EP.

“Sungrazer” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2023’ Spotify playlist.
