C.O.M.F.O.R.T.A.B.L.E – ‘Drive Octane Through While Humming Tunes’

//

A grippingly atmospheric electronic sound impresses on the latest album from Melbourne-based artist C.O.M.F.O.R.T.A.B.L.E. Drive Octane Through While Humming Tunes struts an eclectic tonal range, from the serene piano-laden crackling of “Waiting Without Hope Of Change” to the title track’s glistening grooves. The project serves as an acronym for an apt description of the music within: Chords Or Melody Formed Over Rich Textures All Become Luminous Echoes.

In the more patiently unfolding vein, “Lament For Australian Hospital Ship Centaur” delivers a textural effervescence in its piano-forward swell; I’m reminded fondly of Tim Hecker’s tendency for spaciously gripping spells. “It’s All The Deep End” is another captivating structural marvel, growing from quaint pulsations into shimmering background, lending a meditation-friendly engrossment. “Break” proves spine-chilling toward the album’s conclusion, immersing graceful piano and airy backing effects alongside sporadic, subdued vocal insertions. Drive Octane Through While Humming Tunes is a riveting showcase from C.O.M.F.O.R.T.A.B.L.E.

“Drive Octane Through While Humming Tunes” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2023’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Electronic.
