Oscilla – “Tornado”

//

“Tornado” is a serenely gripping single from Oscilla, the project of Frances England. The past decade+ has seen the San Francisco-based artist draw acclaim for folk music tailored toward children and families, earning a Grammy in 2017. Oscilla represents a more layered, emotively adult direction for her riveting folk sound.

Described as “an ode to the restless hearts & the introspectives,” “Tornado” lyrically exudes a contemplative sky-watching amidst mellow guitar stylings and understated percussive shakes. Glistening guitar lines during the “restless hearts don’t make plans,” and “always up in the air,” refrain send chills. “Tornado” impresses in both its ruminating, dreamy folk beginnings and satiating “up in the air,” culmination, reminding of the perpetual-feeling tentativeness surrounding many of life’s decisions.

The track marks the first release from Oscilla’s upcoming EP, Drink Up the Sun.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2023’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Folk.
