The Screaming Pope – ‘Our Love Is Music’

/

Boston-based artist The Screaming Pope shows an inventive, atmospheric pop sound on the new album Our Love Is Music. The project represents the alias of George Bolton, who has been involved in the electronic music scene since 1979 — also playing with, writing for, and doing session work for a variety of acts. Our Love Is Music showcases Bolton’s strong ability to blend melodic pop hooks with intriguing, electronic-minded soundscapes. The album is described by Bolton as “more emotional and singer-songwriter oriented at times than my other releases.”

An island-set pop sound enamors on the opening title track. “Our love is all the music that went off course,” a soaring vocal vibrancy lets out, complemented by marimba-like charm, mellow guitar stylings, and tropical-friendly percussive flairs. “Sleeping Alone” relays a more spacious yearning, with a grooving bass line, atmospheric synths, and dual-layered vocal immersion combining for a palpably emotive engrossment.

“Brown Eyes Blinking” is another highlight, exuding a more grandiose emotion in its string-laden majesty. Stirring piano twinkling drives into a stirring vocal performance, relaying the impact of pain and the drive to save oneself from deepening heartache. Our Love Is Music is a thorough success in emotive, atmospheric pop songwriting and production.

“Brown Eyes Blinking” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2023’ Spotify playlist.
