Kate Pending – “Onyx Skies”

/

Electro-pop and drum-n-bass appeal linger throughout “Onyx Skies,” a striking new single from Berlin-based artist Kate Pending. Preceding an upcoming album, “Onyx Skies” is described by the artist as “about the future journey of our species, potentially travelling into the great unknown of the universe.” Pending continues: “I’ve always found onyx a beautiful mineral, which reminds me of the deep, infinite expanse of space, and the emphasis on the letter x, is a reference to how in algebra, it is used to represent the unknown variable or quantity. The dark and beautiful unknown.”

“Onyx Skies” builds with patiently engrossing allure, developing with nostalgic synth tones and gradual vocal unveiling. The 50-second mark unveils a chilly synth line, meshing cohesively with the buzzing undercurrent. Stutter-y, submerged vocals adorn the hypnotic synth assembly with compelling qualities. “Searching onyx skies,” the vocals assume a more melodic character at the track’s mid-point, prior to the vocals fading as glimmering synths flourish into the finale. An array of buzzing synths, brighter tonal shifts, and hypnotic vocal work make for a consuming production throughout “Onyx Skies.”

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Electronic.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
