“Always/Never” is a dreamy shoegaze-inclined charmer from Kallai, a newly formed band from Portland, Oregon. The project comprises members from various acts: Trance to the Sun, Lost Echoes, and Luscious Apparatus. Kallai’s melding of shoegaze, post-punk, and dream-pop enamor on “Always/Never,” which represents the lead single from their upcoming debut EP, out in June.
The track wastes no time with atmospheric immersion, launching into hazy guitar distortion that lingers with reverb-friendly warmness. The serenely dazed vocals enter with seamless cohesion, as the guitars assume a more twinkling intrigue. The wistfully melodic appeal arisen from gauzy vocals and evolving guitars — with a compelling soaring lingering past the two-minute turn — remind fondly of Souvlaki-era Slowdive. The captivating “Always/Never” certainly has us anticipating the project’s forthcoming EP.
