Mumbai-based singer/songwriter Kamakshi Khanna enamors with a blend of pop, folk, and soul on her new EP, Heartbreak 2020. The release showcases a personal journey within the replay-inducing production. The artist explains: “The EP is an honest account of the various experiences in my life I came across post my teenage years, charting a path from the anxious jitters of an initial crush in ‘I Blew It!’ to the roaring anger of betrayal in ‘Love Is Not a Fucking Game’, and the bittersweet acceptance in ‘Tourist’.”
Bouncy bass and radiant synths stir on the opening “I Blew It!” — gripping in its vulnerable lyrical admittances and glistening hookiness. “Even when you’re a little cold, I don’t mind you,” the vocals convey, clearly smitten. “I blew it, didn’t I?” they further question, dazzling into frolicking synth delights; it’s a fantastic opener to a standout EP. “Love Is Not A Fucking Game” follows with more folk-laden evolution, expanding from quaint acoustics into an empowering pop ardency; the artist’s dynamic range is on full display there.
The final two tracks continue to showcase enamoring songwriting. “Tourist” artfully conveys a sense of feeling out of place, within a comforting arsenal of tender piano and acoustics — evoking a sense of sophisti-pop nostalgia. The EP’s title track concludes with a satiating, soulful pop entrancement. Heartbreak 2020 is a melodic showcase from Kamakshi Khanna.
