Brandi Myer – “Crossing the Lines”

The second single from Canadian singer-songwriter Brandi Myer, “Crossing the Lines” melds warming guitar layers, caressing organs, and introspective lyricism for a memorable success. ’90s rock and Americana influences embed within, while the track’s lyrics ruminate on passing time and the desire to escape from one’s past. Depictions of an “unfamiliar skyline, rising into view,” invoke a fresh start, and moving on from a hometown and/or previous tumult with artful precision. Also contributing on the track is Myer’s mentor Brynn Arens (Flipp), who added organ textures and played bass. Minneapolis-based artist Peter Anderson also provided percussion.

The lyrical setting — of a protagonist in their 30s, aspiring to “get away,” — is enjoyably complemented by twanging guitar work and gentle organs, while Myer’s vocal presence exudes a melodic introspection reminiscent of Brandi Carlile. “Chasing dreams, or so it seems, to keep the nightmares at bay,” Myer continues into the moody “timeline of mistakes,” bridge — recounting previous baggage and the desire to rebuild a life, even if it’s in the shadow of an “unfamiliar skyline.” “Crossing the Lines” is a moving, heartrending piece of songwriting from the Manitoba-based artist, who eloquently captures a crossroads in life where positive change beckons.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Folk.
