A moving new track from New York-based artist Alwyn Morrison, “Chained” represents the most personal song he has ever written. An approachable pop/rock production melds with intricate explorations of loving someone with depression and striving to help them through, though with that taking a personal toll in the process. Although personal in its inspiration, the release resonates in a relatability for anyone in a relationship; it’s common for one or both partners to experience struggle at some point, and the journey in being there for them — while sacrificing something of themselves — can be impactful.
The track was written spontaneously, after a rush of emotions. “I wrote the lyrics while traveling from New York to Amsterdam. Before my flight, I took a walk through Central Park, and a wave of emotion hit me,” Morrison says. “I could not write it down until I got on the plane. Once I sat down, the words just poured out. I wrote the whole song in one sitting and never changed a single line.”
“How many years have I been inside ’cause you won’t go out?” Morrison’s melodic vocals ask, complemented by sporadic guitar shimmers as a metaphorical prowess emerges: “chained to a dark room, every night and day.” The “dark room” referencing proves impactful, capturing a state wherein one tries to help, though becomes limited themselves in life as a result. Heartfelt and sincere in its songwriting, “Chained” is a stirringly personal success from Alwyn Morrison.
