Dream Bodies – “Don’t Look Back”

//

A hauntingly dreamy post-punk nostalgia emanates throughout “Don’t Look Back,” a newly released track from Dream Bodies, the solo project of Los Angeles-based artist Steven Fleet. Bearing a fond aesthetical resemblance to classic The Chameleons UK, “Don’t Look Back” traverses with enjoyable momentum — expanding from arp-y synth buzzing and steady percussion into nocturnal guitar twangs, and then a delectably moody vocal emergence. “Once you had a girl with stars in her hair,” they let out wistfully, building into a fervent “so don’t you look back,” urging.

The production’s fusing of dreamy synth pads, flickering guitar lines, and pulsing bass elements plays with seamless entrancement throughout — accompanying a forever timely thematic hold, in emphasizing to look ahead rather than lingering on a tumultuous past. “Something’s waiting for me on the other side,” the vocals exude at one point, ceding to “the stars,” to decide what’s come ahead. “Don’t Look Back” is a riveting, stylish showcase in songwriting and production from Dream Bodies.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Dream-Pop.
