Peaks Island and Other Places is an affecting, heartfelt album from Little Champion — highlighted by tracks like “Half Moon Bae” and “Suburbs” that capture a particular place, time, and emotion within a melodic production. Check out our full feature of the album, here.
Described as the album’s most ambitious track, “Half Moon Bae” stirs in its dynamic sense of momentum — propelled by 3/4 verses and a 4/4 chorus — and melodic blend of guitars, drums, Wurlitzer, glockenspiels, and ocean field recordings. The dreamy, inviting production invokes a sense of adoration for a specific place. Nostalgic references to VHS and references to “moving water,” feel in reference to the passage of time — inviting within a melodic swirl of tender guitars and twinkling keys.
As highlighted in our glowing review of the album, “Suburbs” also immerses in its seizing of a particular time and place; it struts a twangy rock breeziness amidst perceptions of suburbia’s knack for repetition and disappointments — though also its sense of comforting calm. “It smells like the suburbs, cut grass and Panera,” the vocals emit, punctuated by further displays of soul-searching: “I don’t know what I’m doing with my life / But I’d rather not think about that tonight.”
