Solkyri – ‘Cranebrook’ EP

Sydney-based band Solkyri unveil an immersive instrumental post-rock sound on their new EP, Cranebrook. Spanning from thunderous rock to understated folk tonal dispositions, the EP’s production excels in providing a captivating listening experience. The release — which was inspired by the band’s Western Sydney roots — continues ample success for the band, whose 2020 album Mount Pleasant hit #1 on the AIR Independent Charts.

Opening the EP, “Wherever We End Up Next” showcases the act’s tendency for palpable structural momentum. Weepy strings craft an introspective entrancement initially, blasting off around the two-minute turn into bursting guitar and bass additions; the overall ascent reminds fondly of Sigur Rós. The ensuing “I Guess I’ll Be Leaving Now” opens elegantly as well, weaving effervescent piano glistening seamlessly amidst orchestral-laden swells — and into a gorgeous chamber-folk beckoning with acoustic trickles and heartrending strings. The EP quickly compels with its strong commencing one-two punch.

The rest of the release continues to captivate, from further dreamy folk-set charmers like “Autumn Mould” to the concise though impactful percussive passion within “1804.” “You Coward! (Shambles II)” is another highlight, venturing from intriguing ambience into a lovely melding of lush acoustics, twinkling keys, and delicate strings. Cranebrook is a riveting EP, full of atmospheric prowess and enjoyable structural unfoldings.
