3rd Deck – ‘The Fallout’ EP

An invigorating rock sound impresses across The Fallout EP, the latest from 3rd Deck, a band based in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Their third EP was crafted over the past two years, following up 2023’s CAUTION EP. They continue to strut a compelling ’90s alternative rock inspiration, which pairs with their high-quality songwriting, venturing through both hooky immediacy and strongly emotive cores.

“We’re in the fallout!” an ardent vocal declaration exudes on the EP’s riveting title track, lyrically yearning for “things to change” as distorted guitars and clamoring percussion intertwine with energetic passion. The thematic sense of foreboding — “waiting for the gavel to fall” — and a strife-filled modern age combines aptly with the rousing rock production. The ensuing “Chasing Dreams” continues to lament on present obstacles and “expectations tearing at the seams” within a theoretical “house on fire.” Chiming guitar twangs and reverberating distortion infuse within fervent vocals for another memorable production.

“Exposed” also stands out for its anthemic passion, exhilarating in ruminations on a tendency to “blame our mistakes on the hands we hold” and waging personal battles, leaving to a feeling of being “exposed.” EP finale “All I’ve Ever Been” concludes it all with satiating impact, infusing descriptions of physically and mentally weathered as sludgy distorted guitar pulses surround with delectably dark intrigue. Succeeding across all five of its tracks, The Fallout is a resonating success of an EP from 3rd Deck.

“Fallout” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
