A dynamic psych-rock journey unveils on “Summer’s Gate,” a memorable track from Stockholm-based project Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends. The epic, gripping finale from the act’s 2021 album 17 Birds at the Summer’s Gate, “Summer’s Gate” invigorates across a plethora of moments — from the gripping, soaring guitar solos that show shades of Pink Floyd, to an initially ambient traversal that intrigues in its acoustic and orchestral mystique.
“I wrote the song in 2020, before the war in Ukraine and disastrous development in the Middle East,” says Arne Floryd, also formerly of the band Redmoon. “But it could (or should) have been written today.”
The production’s eventual swell into sporadic guitar pulses and chiming organs gives way to his riveting vocal presence, where accounts of foreboding ominousness — “the grass is still brown” — infuse aptly within the art-rock momentum. Harmonious vocals and ardent psych-rock expanses then prove blissful around mid-point, where haunting organs and enthralling guitar work star. “Summer’s Gate” is a delectably moody success, conveying tumult and senses of loss within a darkly impactful rock ardor.
