Brighton, UK-based band CARNE invigorate with a soaring rock sound on “VAST,” their second single. Drawing from ’90s alt-rock inspirations like PJ Harvey and Smashing Pumpkins, the four-piece channel an impassioned and dynamic appeal — traversing from jangling verses into a grunge-touched ardor within the central chorus. Shades of Wolf Alice show in their commanding, stylish rock sound — consuming in dynamics between heavier and introspective moments.
“I’ve landed In the in-between, vast and green,” Carmen Mellino’s spaciously inviting vocals open within a playful guitar-fronted realm; the section is book-ended by an onslaught of wonderfully raucous guitar tones, reminding of Siamese Dream-era Pumpkins in their whirring distortion, and especially in the stomping briefness that takes hold into the “unveil this masquerade” pleading.
CARNE thoroughly impress with “VAST,” which they describe as “about feeling closer to people when you’re in a new environment but disconnected once you’re back home.” They also note it dealing “with the struggle and needs of connection while trying to move on from the intensity and joy of touring.”
