A dreamy, jangling pop appeal shines on “Summer Rain,” an alluring new single from Nashville-based artist Kristen Castro. Coming via her upcoming debut album Capricorn Baby, out on August 29th, “Summer Rain” excels in both its lushly introspective verses and chorus’ glowing enthusiasm, featuring a hypnotic title-touting refrain that melds cohesively with bouncy bass and shimmering guitars.
Alongside the melodic production persists a compelling thematic pursuit, which Castro describes as “the encapsulation of ego death.” She continues about the track: “It’s about the ache of death and rebirth, rain on sun-warmed skin as you fall apart, only to find yourself five years later.”
Fluttering guitars and prancing, jangly radiance opens the track with accessible charm, as Castro’s vocals enter with lush entrancement. “Courage comes in waves,” Castro’s vocals let out. “Come and take a dive, leave me here to dry.” These and other lyrics within explore that concept of ego, with the act of “drying” perhaps alluding to becoming something new after a transformative experience. The track also resonates in its celebration of identity, and feelings of renewal — like the landscape as a summer rain washes away arid desolation.
“Only a few queer Mexican-American women are producing their own music. I’m proud to be one of them,” Castro says. “Summer Rain” is a thoroughly inviting, harmoniously introspective success from the talented singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer.
