Stray Blue – “Wake Up & Smile – Acoustic Version”

A memorable two-song project from Greek act Stray Blue, Wake Up & Smile stirs with its hypnotic, melodic title track and delectably moody “Moody Sky,” which features noted cellist Yoed Nir. Founded by guitarist/vocalist Nick Anastasakis in 2005 and rounded out by bassist/vocalist George Athanas and drummer George Papazoglou, Stray Blue has been an acclaimed mainstay in Greece’s live music scene, appearing across a variety of acclaimed festivals and venues. The Los Angeles-based Anastasakis also re-imagines Stray Blue songs under his solo project, The Afro Nick.

Wake Up & Smile plays as a celebration of the band’s two decades together. Their dynamic aesthetical prowess and knack for melodic immediacy are apparent on the two tracks, which were recorded in Thessaloniki, Greece. A tendency for harmonious, introspective captivation shines throughout their discography and live performances, and continues here with the tracks “Wake Up & Smile – Acoustic Version” and “Moody Sky.”

“Let me tell you something, life isn’t always the way you want it to be,” wise words emanate to opening “Wake Up & Smile,” which eases in alongside fluttering acoustics and amiable, contemplative lyricism. The conversational vocals prove inviting in their depictions of love, and also “as the days go by” ruminations on a once-flourishing relationship now being a thing of the past.

Harmonious, wordless backing vocals ride into the title-touting hook, acknowledging “I feel fine” while regarding previous hardships as a learning experience that emphasizes the roles of perseverance and optimism. “Moody Sky” is another delight, feeling more somber in its trickling guitar and heartfelt cello work. Both tracks are exemplary of the fantastic songwriting that fans of Stray Blue have come to expect.
