Yas Akdag – ‘Home, Anywhere’ EP

Melding folk and pop within introspections on the multiple roles of one’s home, Home, Anywhere is the engaging new EP from Yas Akdag, an artist originally from London and now based in Brooklyn. “At its core, Home, Anywhere is about realizing that ‘home’ is not just one place,” says Akdag, who is also a classical pianist and jazz saxophonist. “It’s your hometown; it’s your friends, family, and partner; it’s the guy who makes your bagel exactly how you like; it’s an inside joke only you and somebody else knows about. While making this project, I realized ‘home’ can be anything and everything I want it to be.”

“Without You” opens the EP in riveting form, poetic in its lyrical depictions of hardships and comparison to a garden — full of weeds and debris, though with the potential to find a beautiful flower amongst it all. Sporadic piano pulses and ruminating vocals rise into a powerful ascent — “I don’t see my future without you” — as guitars and percussion enter the fold. The ensuing “White Picket Fence” also conveys a sense of yearning, asking “where do we meet in the middle?” as glistening synths accompany; its explorations of compromising in a relationship prove fully resonating.

Another standout, “Joan” traverses across serene acoustics and piano within a retrospective lyrical spirit. “I wish I could call your phone, I wish I could drive you home,” the vocals let out, exuding personal growth though still a lingering desire to reconnect as brass-laden additions emerge. Home, Anywhere is a consuming EP that enjoyably showcases Yas Akdag’s personal, sincere songwriting.
