A fusing of classical elegance and avant-garde jazz intrigue, “Durer’s Dream” is a gorgeous new track from Ben Miller, a jazz pianist based in Rochester, NY. The release is the opener to Miller’s forthcoming full ensemble project, Dweller on the Threshold. “Durer’s Dream” takes inspiration from Albrecht Dürer’s 1514 engraving Melencolia I and Carl Jung’s journey of shadow integration, infusing philosophical insights of the personal unconscious and psyche within a flourishing production. “This is the threshold,” Miller says of the track. “Not just of the album, but of the self—the edge of the known psyche. Dürer’s Dream is the first whisper from that place.”
Crafted by Miller at his own Third Motion Studios, “Durer’s Dream” maneuvers with steadily unfolding, enchanting qualities. A plucky ethereality eases in as steady string-laden ruminations come alongside, followed by hypnotic vocals and woodwind spine-tingling. Wordless vocal chills infuse within the captivating, lush soundscape as the track reaches its sating conclusion, leaving a very strong impression despite a brief runtime that hits at less than 1.5 minutes. “Durer’s Dream” is a beautiful aesthetical and atmospheric success that has us firmly anticipating Miller’s upcoming Dweller on the Threshold.
