Philip La Rosa – “No Matter”

A soulful pop affection resonates on “No Matter,” a smoothly memorable new single from Australian artist Philip La Rosa. Moody guitars and radiant synth work maneuver seamlessly amidst a fervent vocal presence, yearning in its “I need you” central hook with soaring charisma, following subdued intrigue in the verses. “Love is as fleeting as it is so deep / Where I saw roses you saw thorns,” the vocals let out in the introspective verses, building with momentum into the vibrant central hook and synth/guitar interplay. The production, from Nic Rollo, impresses in its balancing of atmospheric soulfulness and upfront vocal emotion.

Shades of Pet Shop Boys show enjoyably in the “went our separate ways” switch-up, where a debonair vocal presence glides amidst spacey synth elements. “Nobody how hard I breathe, I suffocate under you,” the chorus re-emerges thereafter, exuding palpable emotion into a vibe-y conclusion with twangy guitars and late-night electronic atmospherics. The track is a consuming showcase in songwriting and production from Philip La Rosa, who co-wrote the release with poet Joshua Britiffe, drawing from his upcoming book Love and Other Death Sentences.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Indie Funk, Soul, and R&B.
