Thomas Prothero – “Disposable People”

Haunting vocal harmonies and a dreamily atmospheric immersion consume on “Disposable People,” a newly released single from Thomas Prothero. Exploring the transient nature of relationships, the track stirs in its overall introspective and dynamic tonal push — interweaving both strings and spacey synths across its affecting palette. “It’s about the way people drift into our lives, help us grow, and drift out again — and the cold realisation that sometimes, to others, we’re just as replaceable,” Prothero says of the release.

A meditative soundscape establishes quickly, as twinkling piano and nocturnal textural stirrings drive into the heady vocal accounts on the coming-and-going of relationships. “People come for seasons, long enough to help you grow,” he sings, initially lamenting on the fleeting nature of connection — though also treasuring how “there’s no two souls alike” into more weary sentiments of how “people are disposable too” and “you give such a good impression of a real human being.” It’s a reflective, poignant exploration of how relationships shape us, even when they’re temporary — dazzling across its array of instrumentation, from quaint piano to buzzy synth swells, alongside the ghostly vocal layers.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
