Elephant Moon – “Good Medicine”

“Good Medicine” is a grippingly atmospheric folk single from Elephant Moon, the solo project of Danish singer-songwriter Anders Dal. Also featuring Barbara Bartz on violin and David Villanueva on bass, the track was recorded in one take — and as a result moves with a consuming spontaneity, resembling a midnight introspection in its fusing of fingerpicked guitar, strings, and lyrical descriptions of personal burnout, healing, and the importance of being present. “Good Medicine” follows up Elephant Moon’s previous single “Where Were You,” which also impressed with its memorable songcraft, melding lap steel and analog synth work.

“I wrote ‘Good Medicine’ when I was totally burned out,” Dal says. “It’s just a reminder to stop, breathe and just be.”

A darkly cinematic character emanates right away, as fingerpicked guitar and haunting violin complement a chilling vocal delivery. “You’re so tired that you cannot sleep, your eyes puffy as can be,” they let out, cohesively weaving weary descriptions and a lack of self-care with the rousing chamber-folk backing. A melodic vocal ascent unveils thereafter: “All I wanna do / Is sit in the sun / Spend time with you.” The harmonious vocal layering, and push to “ease your mind,” makes for a riveting central chorus — moving impactfully as a refrain into the track’s sating conclusion. Elephant Moon’s “Good Medicine” is a resonating folk success, full of atmosphere and emotion.
