Unleashing a creative electronic charisma, Two Huge Rocks, in Peru is the new EP from Jean RN. The Stowmarket, England-based project, representing the alias of multi-instrumentalist and producer Ben Wright, first caught our ears a couple years ago with the SKID MARKZ EP. Like that excellent release, Two Huge Rocks, in Peru compels in its knack for climactic builds and colorful instrumentation — embracing illuminated synths, sample warping, and a tendency for sating atmospheric evolutions.
“Jean RNB” opens the EP with an intoxicating atmospheric pull. A heavy bass tone and jazzy percussive elements are bolstered by ghostly, wordless backing vocal effects — resembling a lovable cross between Oneohtrix Point Never and Flying Lotus. A drum fill leads into sporadic pulses of keys as hazy vocals linger alongside, weaving between punchy electronic effects and spacey lushness. The track in general immerses with its tonal variety, seamlessly shifting between serene intrigue and rhythmically intensifying infectiousness.
The ensuing “Lebensabschnittsgefährte” consumes structurally with a steadier sense of momentum, rather than the back-and-forth enjoyment of the opener. A simmering enthusiasm shows right away, as warming synth tones and subdued vocal elements converge. A vibrant, catchy energy stirs by the first minute’s conclusion; the fervency doesn’t let up, particularly in a bursting mid-point with ’80s nostalgia in its whirring synth tones, melding seamlessly with panting rhythmic entrancement.
EP finale “Chessnerd” is another highlight; like “Jean RNB” it dazzles in its wide range of tonal pursuits, from laid-back initial introspection into a high-charged danceability as the synths swell with stutter-y allure past the one-minute turn.
