Olivia Millin – “Soul for the Taking”

As the air gets chillier and skies begin to darken earlier and earlier, Halloween season approaches — and tracks like Olivia Millin‘s “Soul for the Taking” remind of the holiday’s musical-minded allure. Bouncy synth pulses and a melodic vocal spirit enamor throughout, guided initially by a solemn piano-set intrigue. Panting percussion ensues as the buzzy synths emerge seamlessly. “No one can hear you here, you’re on your own, you’ve disappeared,” Millin’s vocals let out with ominous immersion as the bridge begins to build.

“Your fear is delicious, one bite and you’ll be…” her vocals continue, culminating in a horror-film scream effect — and playing cinematically, in resembling the arrival of brooding monster antagonists. “The afterlife is waiting, your soul is ours for the taking,” the hook culminates in, cohesively blending vibrant synth-pop peppiness with delectably foreboding lyricism fit for Halloween frights in the night. Bolstered by an excellent lyric video that leans into Halloween imagery and colors, “Soul for the Taking” represents a thorough success from Olivia Millin.

“I wanted to create a song that felt like a Halloween movie you could dance to,” says the quickly ascending 20-year-old artist, who wrote the track and then had it produced by Suite Dreamz and Kevin Charge. “It’s creepy, fun, and a little dangerous—all the things that make Halloween so exciting. This song is about surrendering to the thrill of fear while having the time of your life.”
