Foxbridge – ‘Uncrossing The Stars’ EP

/

Foxbridge, the UK-based duo of Emily Ellicott and Justin Capps, bring a striking blend of heartfelt lyricism and Americana/folk stylings on new EP Uncrossing The Stars. Their sound moves fluidly between lusher reflection and expressive fervor. Ranging from the opener’s spirited momentum and the piano-laden emotion of “Firelight,” the EP showcases the breadth of their approach, where tender storytelling expands into sweeping emotional release.

Opening track “X Marks the Spot” openly declares itself as a scene-setter, the vocals depicting its “edge of town, in the dead of night, no one’s around” aura. Solemn harmonica and sturdy guitar strums complement the vocal build-up, which flourishes into a more rousing fervency as the “x marks the spot, and he’s taking everything I’ve got” hook arrives underneath a blood moon’s unmistakable glow. It marks a great kick-off to the EP, showcasing Foxbridge’s ability to move seamlessly between more spacious Americana-set introspections and ardent, soulful emotion.

The EP’s four subsequent tracks shine with similar high-quality songwriting. The ensuing “Firelight” presents a more ballad-friendly aesthetic initially, as twinkling piano and world-weary lyrical perspectives — trying to find “the right time” and words — move into a multi-vocal chorus with a “where the shadows meet” vocal entrancement and twangy guitar savvy, ruminating on how a spark begins and the emotional fire needed to suffice. “Die On The Vine” also excels in its moody vocal soaring, mingling with lush orchestration past the mid-point, while EP finale “Rainbow At The Gallows” strives to persevere through one’s “darkest hour” — its vocal duet stirring amidst piano and second-half guitar power. Uncrossing The Stars cements Foxbridge as a duo with a penchant for memorable songwriting, balancing intimacy with grandeur in affecting form.

“X Marks the Spot” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
