HOLDN – “i’m the only one”

A soulful, electro-touched atmospheric rendition of the Melissa Etheridge classic, “i’m the only one” is a thorough success from HOLDN. Ghostly vocals and pit-pattering rhythms infuse with spaciously sporadic synths to start, then evolving into the timeless title-bearing chorus — here punctuated by an infectious “for you” stutter-y vocal sample following the lead vocals’ vibrancy. Covers often need to add something new, in terms of atmosphere, to really catch our ears — and this take on “i’m the only one” certainly fits the bill.

HOLDN says of the track:

“as a teenager, I taught myself how to produce and arrange through recreating & reimagining my favorite songs. this is me as an artist returning to my roots to emulate what I felt listening to these songs as a child, to what I know now. fully produced at home, ‘i’m the only one’ is a song my father used to play in the car when he drove me to day care, telling me that maybe one day I’ll learn to play and sing like Melissa Etheridge. A true homage to a special moment and a special artist.”
