MothBreath – “Misty Blue”

/

A dreamy rock spell takes hold on “Misty Blue,” a track from MothBreath that excels in both its lush atmospheric prowess and emotive vocal entrancement. Also featuring glimpses of nostalgic trip-hop in its rhythmic backing, the track enthralls with its melodic progression and overall feel. The track continues a trend of standout songwriting from the band, who caught our ears already this year with tracks like “Brand New” and “Freedom Machine.”

“Misty Blue was inspired by floating in the ocean one time, feeling really down and realising, though completely immersed, I was being totally supported and soothed by it,” says vocalist/keyboardist/drummer Kirsty Dougall. “Hopefully we’ve captured that feeling of intense sadness mixed with hope. The dark and the light.”

Lush, twanging guitars and sturdy percussion complement a hypnotic vocal presence to start. The soulful vocal emotion, guitar work, and steady rhythms produce an aesthetic reminding fondly of acts like Portishead and Massive Attack. Dougall’s vocals intensify with artful momentum, drifting into a cathartic “feel so much better now” outpouring — bolstered by textured distortion and starry-eyed electronic effects. The ocean imagery within — “let it wash away…” — plays alongside glistening guitars in producing a strongly impactful soundscape, finding a beautiful balance between dreamy intrigue and upfront emotion. “Misty Blue” is another standout success from MothBreath.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
