Tonneau – “Crush on You”

A track that dazzles in its smitten charm, and glistening pop/rock synergy, “Crush on You” is an amiable success from Amsterdam-based act Tonneau. First catching our ears last year with the playful folk single “Here we go again,” Tonneau reveal a more vibrantly expansive sound with “Crush on You.” Its structural expanse flourishes from illuminated chamber-folk “you do something to me” adorations into a lovely “dancing with you” refrain, with pulsing strings, bouncy rhythms, and a melodic backing vocal responsiveness.

The track is a thorough representation of the trio’s strengths — highlighting Tonneau’s enveloping songwriting and vocal work, in addition to the precise bass and rhythmic allure from Jan, and Alies’ gorgeously cinematic orchestral additions. Tonneau also notes: “For this release we also welcomed a new collaborator: Elaine, a vocal coach whose voice gave the background harmonies their shimmering texture. Her presence added a fresh layer of warmth and depth, lifting the chorus into something truly euphoric.”

The “little crush on you” vocal admissions commence with heartrending qualities, reckoning with the unlikelihood of the crush becoming more than that — though daydreaming about them nonetheless. “Dancing with you,” the vocals repeat with brighter enamoring, pairing with Elaine’s backing harmoniousness for a replay-inducing sound. “Crush on You” is a thoroughly inviting success of a track from Tonneau, who elaborates further on its creative spark and overall theme:

“The spark for Crush on You came from the fascination of watching people dance — that mix of joy, tension, and the fear of making a wrong step. On a deeper level, the song is touched by today’s conversations around power and desire, especially in the wake of the #MeToo movement. And beneath it all lies an ancient echo: the biblical story of Herod, who was swayed by a dance into making a fatal promise. The song plays with these layers — light and euphoric on the surface, yet carrying an undercurrent of tension about how admiration can turn into temptation, and how fragile the dance between control and surrender can be.”
