Deaf Locust – ‘Kakorrhaphiophobia’ EP

Rooted in a decade-long creative rebirth, Kakorrhaphiophobia marks a striking new chapter for Deaf Locust, the evolving project of New Jersey-based musician Brian Gawaski (aka Ciem). Steeped in brooding rock textures and cinematic edge, the EP channels his return to songwriting after over a decade, here embracing a sound that bends prog, post-punk, retro pop, and darker experimental threads into something distinctly his own.

Opening the EP, “Even In The Dark” bursts forth with a gripping interplay of anthemic guitar distortion and clanging vibrancy. “Here we stand, on the precipice, holding onto a golden past that never was,” the vocals unveil with steadily melodic precision, reminding stirringly of Suede in their tonal delivery. Bright piano infusions combine with the sweltering guitar work and escalating vocal passion for an enjoyably climactic drive. The ensuing “Running Away” succeeds with a more starry-eyed, nocturnal yearning — asking “why are you running away?” as jangling guitars and harmonious vocals fuse moody rock and doo-wop nostalgia.

Elsewhere, “Tainted World” succeeds in its use of heavy guitar pulses, ghostly wordless vocal elements, and scenic synth tones — making for a hard-rock and synth-rock energy that thoroughly compels. The EP’s self-titled finale then moves in with enthralling intrigue, swelling with ominous initial ambience as eerie frequencies evolve into chilling vocal processions and unsettling blaring, before a more subdued yet similarly haunting outro. Full of atmosphere and dynamic tonal captivation, Kakorrhaphiophobia is a fully memorable showing from Deaf Locust.
