Bristol, UK-based artist Elles Bailey shines on “Growing Roots,” the soulful first single from her upcoming album Can’t Take My Story Away, out January 16th via Cooking Vinyl and Outlaw Music. Blending blues, folk, and her trademark narrative grit, the track explores the rare calm that comes with finding someone who steadies a restless heart.
“The track is a love song about finding your person—the one who makes you want to set aside your gypsy heart and finally settle down,” Bailey says. “It’s about choosing to put down roots and to grow together but it is also about what that person teaches you, who you are when you’re with them, and the beauty of truly living in the moment.”
“Growing Roots” commences with a grooving folk-rock appeal, fusing twangy guitars, a dash of organs, and mellow piano as Bailey’s vocals move in with soulful charisma. “I love it when the wind blows wild, and the sun it sets the sky on fire,” her vocals let out. “I can barely keep myself from running out on everyone else now.”
The track’s magnetic title-bearing hook then takes hold, featuring a call-and-response vocal character that flows with doses of blues and soul. “This wild heart’s growing roots,” Bailey’s enveloping vocals continue. A fantastic guitar solo emerges thereafter with sating, scorching qualities alongside wordless vocal harmonies — then maneuvering seamlessly back into the central hook and brass-touched charm. “Growing Roots” is a powerful, melodic standout that has us thoroughly anticipating Elles Bailey’s upcoming full-length.
