Chloe Dunn – ‘Blossom’ EP

A consuming new EP from Chloe Dunn, Blossom showcases a sound steeped in dynamic allure — ranging from singer-songwriter and folk to ambient and experimental. Violin, loops, and inventive textures coexist throughout, displaying a masterful capacity for songwriting from Dunn, an English multi-instrumentalist and composer based in France. Drawing from both traditional British folk and symphonic depth, Dunn’s music also emphasizes her beautiful work on violin; she has trained with violinists such as Daniel Kurganov, Casey Driessen, and Chris Wood.

“This EP represents the blossoming of my own musical style,” she says. “I discovered my voice through working with loops and effects, which allow me to construct unique soundscapes. My pedals become my paintbrushes, letting me add colour and intensity to my musical expression.”

A wide array of highlights show throughout — opening with the gentle pluckiness and heartrending strings on “Bountiful, Blissful.” An elegantly layered string mingling takes hold just prior to the two-minute turn, with a blissful symphonic pull. Ensuing track “Your Home” is another standout, more climactic in its echoed strings and dreamily inviting vocal glimpses; the title-bearing refrain is hypnotic and replay-inducing as gentle organs enter. From a lovely cover of the traditional “Amazing Grace” to breathtaking originals like the ethereal “An Angel,” Blossom is a thorough success from Chloe Dunn.

“Your Home” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
