Chris Bull, former frontman of Manchester-based band City Reign, introduces his project Every Other Weekend with “Come Back (When You Feel Like),” a warmly nostalgic alt-pop single steeped in jangling guitars and melodic sincerity. Rooted in classic indie-rock charm, the track radiates emotional openness and renewal, pairing throwback power-pop energy with reflective lyricism. The track will serve as the opener to the forthcoming album All Present and Inept, which Bull has been crafting for seven years.
“Really it is a kind of a hymn to self-forgiveness,” Bull says. “It was a reminder that self-expression and the things that bring us joy never leave us. And if we have to put them down from time to time to give ourselves space to deal with the challenges life throws at all of us, that’s ok too.”
Warming, twanging guitars and subtle dashes of synths intertwine with enjoyably melodic qualities, conjuring a sound that resembles a cross between The Replacements and Psychedelic Furs. A vocal introspection, with a tonal approachability akin to ’90s alt-pop nostalgia, emerges with relatable charm: “Some time you might figure out all the answers to the questions hovering at the back of your mind.”
“If you can’t find the words right now,” the lead vocals continue with spirited allure, bolstered by a shimmering backing harmoniousness. A title-bearing punctuation caps off that sequence, then bringing back the initial melding of guitars and synths. Further references to a “new day creeping in” express a cathartic sense of renewal, shown with enjoyable momentum throughout the verses and arriving with sating, replay-inducing prowess within the radiant chorus, which lovably oozes with throwback power-pop and alt-pop energy.
