Jody Ellen – “Imprinted”

Exuding a dreamily absorbing entrancement, “Imprinted” is a resonating new track from Jody Ellen, who took inspiration from “a dream where someone I loved shot me in the chest – a metaphor for the mark heartbreak leaves behind.” Twinkling piano and subdued synth pads intertwine to open the track, as her vocals emerge: “You left your mark on me, imprinted casually.” The yearning shifts to a sense of appreciation — “you made me feel so wanted” — as pit-pattering percussion eases in.

The shift back to melancholic yearning — “but now you’re gone” — invigorates as spacey synth infusions arrive, culminating in an assortment of instrumentation — guitars, piano, rhythms — as accounts of being broken and coping stir. Backing vocal harmonies swell into a final chorus, and then into a lovely finale that brings back the initial piano-set balladry. “Imprinted” is an emotively gripping standout from Jody Ellen.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
