“Run” is a memorable new track from Split Refraction, pairing folk and electronic elements within lyrical reflections of an outlaw’s paranoid flight from the consequences of his past.
A warming array of synths, gentle bass, and click-clacking rhythms complement a contemplative vocal feeling throughout. “Running from the law / Fly like a bird,” they let out, exuding a sense of perpetual motion in lines like “never stick around” and “run run run.” The calming vocal tone and hazy backing instrumentation build enjoyably to the “run run run” bounciness, which still maintains an overall dreamy allure amidst its escapist thematic intrigue. “Run” is a stirring output from Split Refraction.
Split Refraction elaborates more on the track’s creative process:
“I chose not to use pitch correction on the vocals for this, and focused more on a natural chorusing effect using three mics layers and multiple takes. I wanted to capture the frailty of the character who’s life choices led him into the plot of the song. The idea is that even though the character is an outlaw, he’s fragile and has feelings. I believe the story is relatable and tried to capture a good groove with the beat with instrumentation and incorporated as much analog processing as possible into the recording, mixing and mastering phases.”
