An eclectic rock journey, spanning from thunderous guitar tones to spacious intrigue, envelops on “A Favor (The Cell)” — the latest track from Supermarket Parking Lot. Led by singer-songwriter Marco Tewlow and initially starting as a local high school cover band in NYC, the project has since expanded into an original tour-de-force — evident on this standout track, whose creative process began around winter of 2019, when Tewlow read both Camus’ The Stranger and his treatise on The Myth of Sisyphus.
“They hit me like a ton of bricks,” he says. “My worldview was changed forever in an instant, and yet he put into words the abstractions that had been swimming in my mind for years. I wanted to pay tribute.” The song was completed over the years, and now we’re treated to its studio version, following many live performances. The production excels across both bursting guitar tones — complemented by debonair vocal layers — and more trickling momentum, like in the approach to the three-minute turn.
Telow continues: “The song discusses a man who creates his own personal hell as a result of living in bad faith and refusing to take accountability for his actions, both “good” and “bad” (whatever that means). So I, in turn, created a song that is a personal hell to play for each musician involved. But like our humble narrator, upon completion of the journey, we find ourselves satisfied and grateful. I hope you find that release in this song just as much as I have.”
