True North – “On a Prayer with a Broken Wing”

Auckland, NZ-based songwriter Tones Thorburn launches his new collaborative project True North with the soulful, triumphant debut single “On a Prayer with a Broken Wing,” a vibrant blend of rock, soul, and gospel-hearted uplifting. Themes of resilience, faith, and renewal course through the track, elevated by radiant horns, rich vocal interplay, and a standout ensemble of New Zealand musicians. It’s a powerful introduction that positions True North as a project clearly worth following for their vibrant, self-empowering songcraft.

A melodic blend of charismatic brass, debonair piano, and sporadic guitars build with a soulful pop momentum — bolstered by an introspective vocal lead and colorful background harmonizing. A blaring organ infusion continues the climactic sense, culminating in a fierce statement of confidence in oneself when navigating strife: “I never let the rain, take away the fire that’s within.”

The two-minute turn is another standout moment, showcasing an added guitar-laden soaring amidst the corresponding vocals. Lewis McCallum’s gorgeous saxophone work then takes hold, into another “never let the rain” output of perseverant defiance. The final minute then envelops with dazzling vocal expressiveness and a fantastic blend of instrumentation. “On a Prayer with a Broken Wing” is an invigorating, replay-inducing success of a debut from True North.

Also on the track: Matthias Jordan (Pluto) on piano and organ; Milan Borich (Pluto) on drums and gang vocals; Ben King (Goldenhorse, Grand Rapids) on guitar, bass guitar, gang vocals, percussion; Sandy Mill (The Bellbirds, Basement Jax) on vocals; Greg Johnson on trumpet; and Lewis McCallum on saxophone.
