A’shon Galaxy – “More Than Only Friends”

Vallejo, CA–based A’shon Galaxy delivers a warm, emotionally rich blend of jazz, soul, and R&B on “More Than Only Friends,” a track whose accounts of unrequited love prove moving amidst a consuming melodic build-up. Rooted in vintage keyboards, rhythmic guitars, and deep grooves, the song captures his lifelong devotion to expressive, story-driven R&B centered on longing, love, and connection.

Smoothly debonair keys intertwine with stabs of spacey synths to start, as a smitten vocal emergence declares “girl your smile takes me to heaven / I lose my breath when you speak.” Suave guitar twangs and brass-y flourishes add to the vibrant mix as the vocals ascend in emotion, letting out that “it’s so hard to keep love inside a shell” and lamenting a present “just friends” status.

An ensuing “more than only friends” hopefulness rings out, with the breezy brass tones and twinkling piano continuing to immerse alongside melodic backing vocal harmonizing. The lead assumes a more soulful charisma around mid-point, wondering if change will come and whether an unrequited love will become requited. “So many times I tried to fight how I feel,” continues a magnetic, heart-on-sleeve yearning, delighting in its ascent from piano-set admissions to an expansive soulful ardor. “More Than Only Friends” is a replay-inducing standout from A’shon Galaxy.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Funk, Soul, and R&B.
