A modern pop brightness intertwines with vibe-y ’80s nostalgia on “The Weather,” a hooky new single from Washington, DC-based band Broke Royals. Taking inspiration from acts like The 1975, Charly Bliss, and Haim, the track excels with its seamless infusion of bursting guitars, spacey synths, and climactic vocal ascents. Per the band: “We wanted to write something that sounded bright and confident but felt emotionally uneasy underneath. The song is sung by Rebecca Basnight and leans into 80s-style synths and pop guitars, while the lyrics focus on people-pleasing and the anxiety of not being fully heard in a relationship.”
Hazy, shifting guitars move into a comforting bass-laden complement as twinkling synths linger alongside. “Technically you asked me a question, but I can’t seem to get in a word,” Basnight’s serene vocals let out, then escalating with colorful flourishing into the “I’m not gonna say I wanna” segment. Playful guitar jangles and illuminated synth tones complement the amiable vocals, as does a burst of electric guitar vigor as the final minute approaches. “The Weather” is a replay-tempting success from Broke Royals.
