An anthemic, evolving passion takes hold on “Starlet City,” a riveting new track from My Life As A Moth, the London-based and Swedish-born singer-songwriter who caught our ears last year with alt-pop mover “Time Thief.” The release represents the third single from her upcoming sophomore album, The Parade of the Starlet & The Broken Hearted. My Life As A Moth describes the memorable art-rocker as having a sound akin to “a food processor on a slab of concrete drenched in star beams.” Capturing both the bright lights and gritty realizations that come with pursuing artistic success in the big city, “Starlet City” engages strongly in its memorable melodic drive and vibe-y themes.
A swell of expressive, wordless vocals ring out with climactic vigor to start. The lead vocals appear with enjoyable intrigue, lyrically referencing “screaming… in the echo of the void” as delectably fragmented guitar tones, with shades of Bowie’s Scary Monsters, move in. “I’ll make a feast of it,” the vocals intensify into an enthralling title-bearing refrain. Various elements of the production are notable, from the ghostly backing vocal effects approaching the two-minute turn to the fantastic interplay between buzzing distortion and trickling envelopments. “We can ride the subway, it’s a long way home,” the vocals gear up into an energized central hook, grabbing with theatrical allure as the finale arrives with satiating finality.
