The Kiss That Took A Trip – “We are what we protect”

Madrid-based The Kiss That Took A Trip, the solo project of M. D. Trello, resonates on the reflective new single “We are what we protect,” a lush, atmospheric track weaving emotive piano, graceful acoustics, and string-laden textures. Balancing nostalgic ’90s Richard Marx–style sensibilities with post-rock and ambient flourishes, the song meditates on resilience, self-reflection, and two decades of artistic evolution — resulting in a stellar sound that also draws enjoyable comparisons to The Radio Dept. and The Clientele.

Lush acoustic strums and emotive piano work adorn the production with graceful precision, building beautifully into a string-touched somberness as the vocals reach into the “how can I trust, if I just don’t find the strength?” introspection. Lyrical depictions of a restless heart stir as the twinkling piano, subdued acoustics, and warming orchestral resonance intertwine, followed by a wholly spine-tingling “we are what we protect” vocal declaration.

“Wasting all my best days,” the riveting vocals continue, now bolstered by an airy synth pad as accounts of losing control build into a texturally glowing midpoint. An especially invigorating section takes hold as a wash of percussion appears and the vocals continue their ascent, consuming across a final two minutes that conclude with a delicate, piano-led title-bearing refrain. “We are what we protect” is a movingly atmospheric gem of a track from The Kiss That Took A Trip.
