On their debut release “Milogather Parts I & II,” Hartlepool-based band Crescent crafts an expansive, dynamic sound that unravels with a steady, high-tension momentum. The two-part conversation on intimacy pairs blues-tinged psychedelia with a slow-burn coastal atmosphere, ensuring every surge in volume is earned through artful structural growth. This also marks the first release on Shy Bairn Records from the band, which comprises guitarist/vocalist Caleb Hay, keyboardist/vocalist Millie Jones, bassist Jake Beddow, and drummer Christian Tunney.
Warming guitar twangs and wordless, soaring vocal entrancement begin “Milogather Part 1” with climactic fervency. Hazy organs inject seamlessly as the jangling guitars and steady rhythm section persist. The vocals then emerge into Jones’ charismatic lead, soulful and invigorating. An additional electric guitar line exudes a high-flowing quality as the vocals stir with increased emotion, sweltering with “spent so much time with you” accounts and a sense of renewal. Multiple layers of vocals combine for an especially magnetic feeling past the three-minute turn, delectable in its rhythmic, rollicking rock pull and culminating ghostly send-off.
Part 2 succeeds in a more hypnotic realm, simmering initially with throbbing bass and light percussion as mystique-filled guitar lines enter. A darker, brooding soundscape emanates compared to the first part, though still retains its knack for a momentum-filled structural traversal. Jones’ vocal arrival wastes no time unveiling an impassioned soulfulness, beckoning with introspective, haunting appeal as “I’m trying” sentiments intertwine with doses of guitar distortion — dazzling in its evolution from nocturnal, understated grooves into a hard-rocking ardor. Both tracks are phenomenal standouts from Crescent.
