Criminal Hero – “You Better Believe”

“You Better Believe” is a high-octane introduction to Criminal Hero, a Canadian rock project that emerged after founder Rick Harkness rediscovered his creative spark in the dive bars of Detroit. The project’s debut single delivers a lean yet fiercely ardent burst of modern alt-rock and punk synergy. It avoids bloated arrangements in favor of rhythmic, ’70s-inspired grit and a raw vocal conviction that celebrates the simple, soaring triumph of a sold-out room.

“You Better Believe” wastes no time unveiling its no-frills, fervent rock charisma. Blaring guitar distortion complements an impassioned vocal delivery, appearing with sporadic, enjoyable momentum. “Last night, last town. Sold out this time around,” the vocals let out, capturing a celebratory sense of artistry and triumph in that community, with sold-out shows and a rousing crowd being something worth cherishing. A shoutier, punk-ready vocal edge consumes in the “my resolution, our reality” chorus, punctuated by grimy guitar continuations.

“A night they’ll never forget,” the vocals exude with particularly soaring charm, serving up an enjoyable tonal shift before arriving back into the punchy, familiarly inviting chorus. A snarling guitar solo emanates throughout the final minute, taking strong hold as rumbling bass and panting percussion persist underneath. “You Better Believe” is a catchy rock success with plenty of heart, a thorough success of a debut from Criminal Hero.
