Pantomime Horses – “Everyone’s A Ghost”

Showcasing a jangly, psychedelic rock spiritedness, “Everyone’s A Ghost” is an engaging new single from Pantomime Horses, who draw from a deeply personal experience of resilience, following singer Rob Silber’s wife suddenly losing her eyesight. The UK/Spain-based trio blends ’60s psych with ’80s jangle within their memorable sound, creating a mood that evolves from dark mystery into a resilient, kitchen-sink-drama brightness.

Pulsing bass and ruminating percussion lead an intriguing introduction, as vocals emerge with solemn beckoning in a time of personal strife: “Be a star and guide me. Every step, A to B.” Sporadic guitar twangs and blaring organs enter seamlessly alongside, building an ample sense of mystique and escapism as the hypnotic vocals reminisce on dreams and how “I see you … Peter Pan, the whole crew.” The “kitchen sink” sequence then enthralls, adding a jangly guitar quality that combines with melodic vocals and a culminating dose of distortion — for a sound that reminds stirringly of a cross between Peter Gabriel and The Psychedelic Furs.

An especially magnetic sequence arrives as crisp guitar twanging bounces amidst “we feed the birds on Sunday morning” blissfulness, showcasing a vibrantly riveting sound — and proving further exemplary of the band’s excellent tonal range, as the track shifts back into its musings on how imagination is so much more appealing than duties and concentration. “Everything’s invisible. Everyone’s a ghost,” the vocals then conclude into a frolicking, jangling wonderment as the track comes to a fully satiating end. “Everyone’s A Ghost” is a standout success from Pantomime Horses.
