“Old Story” is an expansive rock triumph from Post Hype, the NYC-based project of Chris Curtin, who describes the track as “about what addiction takes from us and coming through the other side.” Its evolution from an orchestral-laden first half — with plucky strings and orchestral intrigue — into a more fervent rock finale feels representative of a process, from introspection to more actionable realizations.
“The drugs had taken what they had once guaranteed,” Curtin’s vocals let out during this compelling first half, adorned by an intriguing array of swelling instrumentation. His more emotive, ardent vocals signal the second half’s entryway into a more rousing rock flair, letting out: “There’s blood in the water / There’s snakes in the grass.” Sludgy guitar distortion and a “fuck it” expression drive into an affirming final contemplation: “The meaning of life is to give life meaning while you can.” Alluring carpe-diem sentiments combine with a dynamic, melodic production for a thorough success from Post Hype.
