Chris Ami – ‘Temperament’

On his gripping debut album Temperament, Hampshire, UK-based producer Chris Ami crafts a psychological journey blending organic strings with electronic precision. Spanning from the philosophical weight of “Hubris” and its Alan Watts sample to the cinematic textures of “Indecision,” the record moves between serene downtempo electronica, expansive flourishes, and intimate, headphone-focused introspection.

The heady, psychological listening experience opens with “Hubris,” masterful in its infusion of heartrending strings and pulsating piano amidst an Alan Watts vocal sample. His words remain ever poignant: “It seems to me we’re getting into that kind of saurian situation with our technology, which is going to lead us to extinction.” A chilling wordless singing then appears seamlessly, moving with ethereal beauty as the layers of strings and twinkling keys continue to intertwine. Coming next, “Nostalgia” conjures a riveting soundscape — aquatic-feeling in its luminous synth swells and click-clacking rhythmic sensations; the result is a glimmering, lush success that feels like a caressing comedown from the opener’s deep contemplations.

Temperament keeps delighting throughout in its rich atmospheric constructions. “Flow” dazzles with its steadily accelerating synth stutters, moving seamlessly into a tightly infectious percussive backing. Spacey synth lines further the lush electro-pop pull, embracing and succeeding within a more minimalist-friendly electronic arsenal. Elsewhere, “Indecision” is again exemplary of Ami’s eclectic reach, achieving a cinematic aura in its wordless vocal harmonies and vibrant instrumentation, finding a middle ground between sweeping orchestrations and electronic intrigue, fondly reminiscent of Oneohtrix Point Never. Temperament is a lovely listening experience, from start to finish, from Chris Ami.
