London’s Deptford Sound Collective explores the healing bond between humans and felines on newly released single “We All Need to Get a Cat.” This South East ensemble of activists pairs a sturdy pulse with electro-pop shimmers, navigating grief and psychological recovery. The track masterfully portrays a pet’s rescuing influence, blending poignant storytelling with infectious, community-driven energy.
A sturdy synth-bass pulse and playfully expanding shimmers lead into a melodic vocal profession: “I just love cats.” Twangy guitar adornments ease in seamlessly, as the vocals let out that “well my dog’s passed, and we cried for days.” The journey to add a cat to the family ensues, and so does the observation of this cool kitty — “spying on my neighbors and casing out the neighborhood, when he’s not demanding attention.” The heightened vocal vocal intensity here combines with effervescent synths for an especially replay-inducing charm.
“My mental health had taken a hit, but you could never understate the power of having a cat,” the vocals continue amidst the flourishing synths. The track dazzles in both its fervent electro-pop drive and impactful lyricism, playing on the concept of getting a cat as a coping mechanism after losing another pet — and with that cat essentially “rescuing” the owner and their somber mental state. Impactful and infectious, “We All Need to Get a Cat” is a strongly memorable output from Deptford Sound Collective.
